What type of jobs can a locksmith do?

What is rekeying?

Rekeying is altering a lock in such a way, that it allows a different key to operate it. It is useful when you are concerned that unauthorized people have keys to the lock, so this way you can solve this problem without changing the entire lock. It is a relatively simple and cost-effective process by changing the tumbler or wafer configuration of the lock. After the rekeying, only the new keys will work while the old one will not.

Can you help me to design a safe system to my house?

Can I have just one key to all of my locks?

Yes, theoretically you can, if the locks are from the same brand or if the common key goes into all of them; Even if the common key does not turn, it can be rekeyed afterwards.

When and why should I change the keys to my home or office?

You should consider to rekey your property when you purchase a new home, if someone has stolen your keys, if you are unsure of how many keys have been made and given out on a property (during remodeling work for example), when you had an employee change or if you feel uncomfortable for any reason about the security of your property.

What is a master key and what is it for?

A master key can be any key, keycard or other device capable of opening a variety of locks. The master-keyed locks are configured to operate with two, or more, different keys: one specific to each lock (the change key), which cannot operate any of the others in the set, and the master key, which operates all the locks in the set.

What is a common entrance suite or ‘maison keying’?
This system is widely used in apartments, office blocks and hotels. Each apartment or office has its own individual key which will not open the doors to any other apartments or offices, but will open common entrance doors and communal service areas. It is often combined with a master-keyed system in which the key is kept by the landlord.
What is a Do Not Duplicate (DND) key?
A “Do Not Duplicate” (DND) key is one that has been stamped “do not duplicate”, “duplication prohibited” or similar by a locksmith or manufacturer as a passive deterrent to discourage a retail key cutting service from duplicating a key without authorization or without contacting the locksmith or manufacturer who originally cut the key. More importantly, this is a key control system for the owner of the key, such as a maintenance person or security guard, to identify keys that should not be freely distributed or used without authorization.
Can a locksmith cut a key from a number, without having the original?

Yes, it is possible in many cases that a locksmith cuts out a key from the code number of a lock. This is common with vehicles, padlocks, filing cabinets, etc. However, it is not possible based on the Vehicle Identification Number (chassis number) numbers.

What is a restricted key and when to have one?
In case of a restricted key the manufacturer has set up a restricted level of sales and distribution. Restricted keys are often protected by patent, which prohibits other manufacturers from making unauthorized productions of the key blank. In many cases, customers must provide proof of ID before a locksmith will cut additional keys using restricted blanks. Many restricted keys have special in-laid features, such as magnets, different types of metal, or even small computer chips to prevent duplication.
